Hello,
This year, KOWIN Ottawa is participating in the Hike for ALS 2018, exploring the trails of Mer Bleue alongside friends, family, and many other members of the ALS community. Together, we are raising money to create a better reality for those living with ALS with hope that there will one day be a future without this disease. Being a part of this community means being a part of a club that nobody wants to join, but there is great strength in coming together at events like this one.
DATE: Saturday, September 29th
TIME: Check-in and registration begin at 9am, with the hike and trail run beginning at 10am
LOCATION: Mer Bleue Conservation Area, Ridge Road, Ottawa, ON K0A 2Y0.
ACTIVITIES: Activities include draw prizes, 50/50 ticket sales, a scavenger hunt for youth & children, and fall themed refreshments.
ROUTES: Participants can select their route of choice from either a 7km trail run, a 5km hike, or a 1.2km boardwalk hike.
FUNDRAISING REWARDS: For everyone who raises at least $100 – you will receive a special Hike for ALS gift. There will be more incentives for your fundraising efforts.
You can make a donation by visiting my personal fundraising page http://support.alsevents.ca/kowinottawa.
Why we hike
As you may know, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (or ALS) is a disease that gradually paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles of the body that we are typically able to move at will. Over time, the muscles of the body break down, someone living with ALS will lose their ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and eventually breathe. There is no cure for ALS and few treatment options, and currently 80% of people with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis. People and families living with this disease face enormous physical, emotional and financial struggles on a daily basis.
How you can help
ALS Canada is a registered charity that receives no government funding – meaning that all of the organization’s work to invest in ALS research, advocate for the needs of families affected by ALS and provide community-based supports are funded through the generosity of donors like you and me. All of the money raised through the Hike for ALS 2018 will be directed to these areas, supporting the thousands of people and families affected by ALS.
Thank you for your support,
